Home to Dream: 142.9 Square Miles (2014)
A city is so much more than lines on a map and a house is so much more than its walls and doors. It is the people who live there and the lives they build that make up the true meaning of a city and a home. With a landmass large enough to fit the cities of San Francisco, Boston and Manhattan within its 142.9 square miles, Detroit is a city with enough room for people to dream. Each empty plot is like a blank canvas waiting for a person with a passion and some paint.
Land of Opportunity in Lace Series (2013-2014)
Detroit is a masterpiece in the making. The empty lots and abandoned historic structures are an artist’s dream, filled with endless possibility and opportunity.
Through the installation of pieces of lace and the placement of lace bricks, I contribute to the rebuilding of the city of Detroit in a way that shows how art and new ideas are the foundation of Detroit’s rebirth. My mind dances along each installation of lace, dreaming of the endless possibilities for each building, burned out light post, and broken window awaiting a new vision.
Necktie Maedeup Series (2012)
The Necktie Maedeup Series explores the tradition of Korean knot making and gender roles. Maedeup has predominately been made and worn by women, so made of men’s neckties these knots are a catalyst into questions of gender roles and expectations across both social and cultural lines. These typically smaller knots gain a renewed presence through their larger scale in hopes that this traditional craft will continue to be revived in modern art practices.
Delicate Strength (2011)
Masculine or femine, strong or delicate: the world is full of categories, which define indi- viduals, objects, and spaces. Most things do not fit within such easily defined classifica- tions. The world is not black and white; it is a sea of grays, overlapping classifications, that give each object and being depth.
This body of work explores the gray areas of materials and gender rewards, and rewards the time taken to understand the similarities and differences of classified beings and objects. Look at the pieces from afar to see the logical classification, then look closer and peel away the overlapping layers to discover the unique shades of gray
