aMending A City: Home, History, Hardship, and Hope

3/8/2014

Today I had the honor of installing work in the Ohio University Eastern Art Gallery. The exhibition aMending A City: Home, History, Hardship, and Hope features the work of myself and Whitney L. Sage. Both of us were raised in the Detroit area and grew up with a love for the city. This exhibition showcases installation, fiber art, photographs, and paintings that all speak to our relationships with Detroit past, present, and future. Between themes and art making processes, it is amazing how much Sage and my work correlates in this exhibition.

The exhibition is on display until the artists reception from 6-8pm on March 27th, 2014. Please join us! For the address and hours see the poster below:

The Women's Caucus for Art's national conference went so well this past week in Chicago, IL. From the Lifetime Achievement Awards Ceremony and Gala to hours of networking and two bus tours to five galleries. One of my favorite things about the conference is how many artists from around the country I meet within a week.

This year WCA put on two national exhibtions: Equilibrium and WCA Best of 2014. I had the pleasure of coordinating the WCA Best of 2014 exhibition at the ARC Gallery. This exhibition was comprised entirely of WCA members and was juried by WCA presidents: Janice Nesser-Chu(Past), Priscilla Otani(Past), and Brenda Oelbaum(Current). After over a year of planing and coordination, nothing is more satisfying than seeing a gallery full of artwork in person. To top it all off, I had the pleasure of meeting the WCA members behind some of the art.

This show is featuring:
Suzanne Anan • Linda Boardman • Jane Caminos • Rhea Carmi • Marie Cenkner Jeannine Cook • Gina Dabrowski • Pamela Daum • Cat Del Buono • Pamela Flynn Lisa Foster •Ellen Freyer • Linda Gleitz • Kate Higley • Karen Hillier • Uma Rani Iyli
Patricia Izzo • Helen Klebesadel • Ronni Komarow • Judy Langston • Viviana Lombrozo Linda Williams McCune • Linda Mendelson • Rosemary Meza-DesPlas • MaryLinda Moss Jennifer Murray • Mary Neubauer •Amy Pleasant • Erica Popp • Juliana Rico • Beth Scher • Carol Scott • Bonita Tabakin • Margi Weir • Corinne Whitaker • Elizabeth White

These are the images I took during the artists reception, along with a few images supplied by the artists for the work that I did not photograph well in the gallery. The artists retain the copyright to their artwork. A special thank you to the staff of the ARC Gallery for all of their help in hanging and manning the show, and to the crew that helped manage the crowds at the reception!

2014 Finlandia Alumni Exhibition

1/16/2014

Finlandia University is hosting its Alumni Exhibition at the Finlandia University Gallery this month. Two of the sculptures from my Necktie Maedeup series were included in this show. After graduating from Finlandia in 2011 with my BFA, I had not returned to Michigan's Upper Peninsula till now. It was so wonderful to catchup with friends, professors and classmates while experiencing all the snow in the U.P.!

During my undergraduate studies I experimented with constructing garments out of neckties. I made vests, hair pieces, a hat, and a dress out of neckties. Many of the community members and professors were excited to see how my work with neckties had progressed into sculptural art forms.

Here is a flashback of one of the necktie pieces from my time at Finlandia. Thanks to Stephanie Trevino for the photo.
